Ledger Data Breach: What You Can Do Next

In July 2020, Ledger reported that the company had experienced a significant data breach. However, the exact details of this event were unknown until December 20, 2020, when phone numbers and home addresses of more than 270,000 customers and over 1 million email addresses were leaked. The data was initially published on Raidforums and then later copied to Intelx and other websites.

What Can I Do Next?

If you are a Ledger customer, you find out whether your personal data has been leaked by going to Intelx. Continue to be cautious of phishing attempts on email/social media and/or personal threats.

The Ledger wallet hardware is currently considered to be a secure option for storing cryptocurrency. You can continue to hold KMD in your Ledger wallet and claim the 5% active user reward. If you are looking for alternative options, non-custodial wallets such as AtomicDEX also support the claim rewards feature for KMD holders. AtomicDEX also supports BTC, ETH, ERC-20 tokens, LTC, ZEC, and a variety of other cryptocurrencies.

Details About The Hack

Customer emails are currently the target of phishing attacks. It’s crucial to be extremely cautious of these emails, and don’t click on any links from emails that could be impersonating Ledger, members of the Ledger team, or legal firms.

Another concern is that leaked home addresses are being used for extortion. In recent days, wallet owners have been threatened with physical violence.

This data breach and subsequent data dump have no impact on the Ledger wallet hardware itself. The aftermath of this event demonstrates once again why data security is increasingly critical in the digital world.
